Who We Are — Even When No One Is Watching

As Knights, we spend a lot of time together, in meetings, at events, and in service to our parish and community. In those moments, it’s easy to live out what we stand for. But the real question is: who are we when we’re not here?
Who we are in everyday life, at work, in conversations, in social settings, and especially online, that’s where our character is truly seen. And right now, this matters more than ever.
We are living in a time where conversations, especially around politics and current events, have become increasingly aggressive. People are quick to react, quick to judge, and too often quick to tear others down.
Respect can disappear quickly when opinions differ. But as Catholics, and as Knights, we are called to something higher. We can disagree, that’s part of life. But how we disagree is what defines us.
In the Letter to the Ephesians, we are reminded: “Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear.” — Ephesians 4:29
Being a peacemaker doesn’t mean avoiding tough conversations. It means approaching them with respect. With restraint. With a mindset to build understanding, not division.
It means not resorting to name-calling. Not speaking poorly about others simply because we disagree. Not letting emotion override who we are called to be. Because whether we realize it or not, we are always representing something, our faith, our council, and our values.
In the Gospel of Matthew, we are reminded: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” —Matthew 5:9
People may not see us here at meetings, but they see how we act out there. So the challenge for all of us is simple: Let’s be the same men out there as we are in here. Respectful. Thoughtful. Grounded in faith. Because being a Knight isn’t just about what we do. It’s about who we are, everywhere we go, everywhere we are at.
