Serving in Every Role

Good evening, Brothers.

I'd like to begin with a short reading from the Gospel of Matthew:

"In the same way, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father."

As Knights of Columbus, service is one of the defining characteristics of who we are. We volunteer at our parish. We support charitable causes. We help families in need. We serve our community whenever we can.

But tonight I'd like us to think about service from a slightly different perspective.

Sometimes we're asked to help because we're Knights.

Other times, we're asked to help simply because we're known as good Catholic men. Reliable neighbors. People who care about our parish and our community.

There's an important difference.

When we're serving at an official Knights of Columbus event, we should proudly represent our council. Wearing our council shirts or Knights apparel lets people know who we are and what the Knights of Columbus stands for.

But there are other occasions when we're volunteering for the parish, helping another ministry, or assisting with a community event that isn't sponsored by the Knights. In those moments, our purpose isn't to represent the Knights of Columbus. It's to support the organization that invited us and to simply be another willing servant.

That doesn't make us any less of a Knight.

In fact, it reflects one of the greatest qualities of a Knight—serving with humility.

We don't serve to be recognized. We don't serve to receive credit. And we don't always need people to know we're Knights when we're helping. Sometimes the greatest witness we can give is simply being known as a faithful Catholic, a dependable volunteer, and a man who is willing to help wherever help is needed.

Whether we're wearing a Knights shirt, a parish volunteer badge, or simply our everyday clothes, our mission remains the same—to reflect Christ through our actions.

Because before we are Knights of Columbus, we are disciples of Christ. The Knights give us a wonderful opportunity to live out that calling, but they are not the only place where we are called to serve.

So let's continue to be proud of our Order and all that it represents. But let's also remember that our greatest witness isn't found in the logo on our shirt. It's found in the character we display, the humility with which we serve, and the example we set every day.
